Some good news for all us small and downright beautiful car lovers – Fiat’s CEO Sergio Marchionne recently announced in a teleconference with financial analysts that Fiat will finally be launching the new Panda in 2011.

Marchionne had applied a spending freeze that spanned from October 2008 to December 2009 and resulted in the delay of the sensible Panda and exquisite Alfa Romeo Guilietta (Alfa Romeo has been part of the Fiat group since 1986).

Fiat cut down group investment spending by 32% in 2009 in an attempt to postpone a number of their programs and make sure that they coincide with Marchionne’s prediction of a structural recovery in 2011.

He also went on to say that we could expect the Alfa Romeo Giulietta (pictured above) to be launched in Geneva in March and the Panda in 2011, two years after it was originally planned.

Smaller cars have definitely enjoyed greater success in South Africa over the last two years but with so much talk of recovery lately, one has to wonder if the timing of the Panda isn’t a tad late. The Giulietta on the other hand could be right on the money with its striking Alfa Romeo good looks and smaller dimensions. It might have the charisma to sway would be Cooper S and BMW 1 Series buyers
