Recession? What Recession?

Recession? What Recession?
Adam Schoeman

Rolls Royce has unveiled its newest (and fastest, by the way) model: the Ghost. At a relatively glittering event in Sandton, two units were shown to an assembled group of motoring journo’s, photographers, TV types, a lot of waiters serving up interesting snacks, and some potential customers – including an elderly lady who arrived in her Bentley Continental Flying Spur, which she proceeded to park horrendously.

Anyway, back to the Ghost: about as big as a 7 Series BMW but considerably more expensive, the car makes an immediate impression with its beautiful proportions. Even though the Spirit of Ecstasy thing at the end of the bonnet is retractable, even when it’s stowed away, there’s no mistaking this car for anything but a Rolls Royce: A gleaming vertical grille and LED elements form a very attractive face that looks very much like the rest of the modern Roller herd. The silver grille surround / bonnet / A pillar combo is an option (and is only available in silver), but it really adds something special.

And in a sort-of first, South Africa is one of the only countries on the planet where you’re able to buy a Ghost right now – in fact, one of the cars on display at the unveiling was already sold. The international launch happens only towards the end of February.

If you’re considering a Ghost as your personal runaround, you’ll need to relieve your piggy bank of R4m. And you’d better do it soon – South Africa has been allocated 20 cars for the year, and 15 are already sold.
