Two GT-R variants on the horizon

Two GT-R variants on the horizon
Adam Schoeman

A duo of new Nissan GT-R incarnations have been seen doing the rounds at the famed Nürburgring in the past weeks, promising two different rides for buyers.

The first, the Spec-M, is a more luxurious GT-R with softer seats and plusher fabrics, and is aimed at people who want to experience the brutal cornering and acceleration of a GT-R but have chronic back problems (I would assume, since there are far more comfortable ways to spend that kind of money).

The non-stupid version is being called The Cup, and basically steals the best parts of the Spec-V (ceramic brakes, carbon fibre wing, and lighter body panels and wheels) but doesn’t inherit the dictator-style price tag.

On top of that, the 3,8-litre turbocharged V6 has been fiddled with, and will now put out 388 kW.

We could say that The Cup was created to give the working class man a shot at the Spec-V performance (working class in supercar terms, I mean), but the more likely truth is that it was built to take back the Nürburgring lap time record that was recently smashed by the Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

Achieving that in a car that costs half that of the RS would just be a cherry on top…
