Datsun brand to launch small, budget hatch
Datsun, the passenger car brand that transformed itself into Nissan in the 1980s, is being prepared for reintroduction as a budget sub-brand, and is set to launch its first new car in almost 17 years.
We’re sure than many will remember the mighty Datsun 240Z, also known as the Fairlady sports coupé, which was a favourite among sports car lovers. But this time round, the Datsun will be on affordable cars, with a budget hatchback the first model to emerge.
The move mirrors what Renault has done with Dacia, which has successfully captured a market for older Renault technology presented in a different shape adorned with a different nameplate, offered at budget-friendly price.
The launch will see the Datsun name initially appear on a single model only – a five-door hatchback – and will be employ components drawn from Nissan’s current and previous-generation of Micra.
So far, only one engine has been confirmed: the 1,2-litre three-cylinder unit from the current-generation Micra, with no diesel alternatives in the works. However, it’s clear that the Datsun revival is part of a more extensive Nissan strategy to create a family of affordable cars,
The Datsun hatch is being produced in India, and will be available in a limited number of regions only, including South Africa, Russia, India and Indonesia.
