300 kW hybrid Yaris concept to appear at Frankfurt

Toyota has confirmed that it will be showing what can only be described as a Le Mans hatchback, at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

The car in question wears the body of a Yaris, with a few modifications, but under the slightly buffed up exterior is a Toyota Motorsport-derived 1,6-litre petrol engine and a pair of electric motors.

In combination the petrol and electric engines are able to produce just shy of 300 kW.

While the petrol engine has been supplied by Toyota Motorsport, the electric motors and capacitors have been sourced from Toyota’s TS030 Hybrid Le Mans racer, which will probably mean that the units needed to recuperate and store the energy for the electric motors, cost as much as a normal Yaris.

Toyota says the Yaris Hybrid-R concept will be a road-going model, meaning that it will be drivable, but that it is unlikely that it will ever be produced.

There might still be some use for this type of performance hybrid. Toyota has said that there is a possibility of it producing a more powerful 86 in the future, but that it could be a hybrid.

This put quite a damper on our expectations of the people’s driving car, but if this Hybrid-R Yaris is what is possible with the technology, then there could well be a glimmer of hope for a Hybrid-R 86.
