Volkswagen has announced a completely new Polo line up, jumping the gun on the expected March unveiling at the Geneva motor show.

After flipping through the changes we can understand why Volkswagen was not able to wait till March, because the amount of changes to the Polo are so significant they could have introduced it as a brand new vehicle.

The majority of the changes have gone into the mechanics of the Polo, with every single engine experiencing a significant overhaul. For the first time the Polo BlueMotion badge will appear on a petrol engine in the form of the Polo TSI BlueMotion. The 66 kW 1,0-litre motor is claimed to return an impressive 4.1l/100 km and will avoid most emission taxes thanks to a rock bottom 94g/km C02 rating.

The base 1,2-litre model does not receive a power bump, staying steady at 44 kW, but does improve claimed fuel consumption by 21% thanks to the inclusion of stop-start and brake-energy recuperation.

Two turbocharged 1,2-litre motors will sit above these engines, and will be available in either 66 or 80 kW stages of tuning.

The Polo Blue GT gets a 1,4-litre TSI engine which will produce a generous 110 kW and will feature cylinder on demand technology. Crowning off the range is the new 150 kW Polo GTI, which brings it inline with the Peugeot 208 GTI and Renault Clio RS.

On the diesel side, the existing 1,2-litre and 1,6-litre TDI’s have been replaced with a single 1,4-litre diesel engine that VW will make available in either 55, 66 or 77 kW.

The entry-level diesel also produces more torque, a claimed 210 Nm at 1500rpm, while still sipping fuel at an impressive 3.4l/100 km.

Depending on the model a five or six speed manual gearbox will be available as standard, as well as an optional seven-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox.

Also new to the Polo range is the inclusion of the optional Sports Select suspension. It will allow drivers to choose between two levels of stiffness, improving the overall ride and handling of the.

It seems there wont be a lack of premium options either as Volkswagen is offering adaptive cruise control as well as city braking and a reverse camera as part of the parking assist. Well-heeled Polo models will also be fitted with full LED high beam lights.

On the outside, the Polo has not changed too much compared to the current model, especially considering the level of change under neither the metal exterior. A new bumper and light cluster will hint at the changes that have been made, as well as a wider grille.

We are unsure which of the engines will be made available to the local market, and when the Polo is set to arrive here. European sales start as earlier as April so a late 2014 release would be a safe bet.
