It’s been a while since we first heard Audi was planning an S1, and it would seem that next month’s Geneva Motor Show is where it will finally will be unveiled.

We knew that that the S1 was imminent as soon as Volkswagen announced that the Polo R would become a production car. Both cars needed an all-wheel drive system, and Audi finally found a way to shoe-horn that system into the compact Polo/A1 platform.

Apart from quattro, the S1 will receive a version of the VW group’s 2,0-litre turbocharged engine, tweaked to produce3 170 kW of max power and a 370 Nm torque peak. In that guise, it has 18 kW less but 20 Nm of torque more than the limited-edition, left-hand drive only A1 quattro released in Europe in 2012.

What is also interesting is that it will have 16 kW less than Volkswagen’s Polo R. Historically the Golf R has always had the same power as the S3, but it seems that this agreement has been broken with the A1/Polo performance hatches.

Audi will be offering the S1 with a six-speed manual gearbox and the usual Haldex multi-clutch four-wheel drive system. An electronically controlled diff will allow for two stages of lock, further enhancing traction.

Although the S1 is pitched against other hot hatches like Renault’s Clio RS and the Mini Cooper S, it surpasses them in performance terms, recording a 0-100km/h sprint time of 5,8 seconds in the three-door version and 5,9 in Sportback guise.

The S1 will come standard with 17-inch wheels wrapped in 215/40 tyres, as well as Audi’s Drive Select, which allows the driver to change the car’s throttle mapping and level of traction.

As mentioned the S1, will make its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, and Audi is expected to ship the first units to Europe in the latter part of this year – which suggests and early 2015 debut for the car on local soil.
