Porsche claims GT3 fire fix imminent

Porsche says it’s close to releasing a fix for the current-generation 911 GT3, following two separate incendiary incidents that severely damated the road legal racer, but luckily claimed no lives.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Porsche CEO Matthias Muller said the Porsche engineering department had uncovered the cause of the fires, and was testing the proposed permanent fix.

The second incident had prompted Porsche to recommend to owners of the remaining 785 GT3’s not to drive them until a solution had been developed.

This situation has resulted in an interesting comparison, though, since this is not the first controversy to plague the 991-gen 911 GT3. When the GT3 was first announced, many die-hard fans were shocked that Porsche would only be offering the car with a seven-speed dual clutch PDK gearbox, ending a long tradition of only fitting manual gearboxes to the GT3.

Interestingly, coverage of the two topics suggests that the possibility of a GT3 transforming itself into a fireball was more concerning than the car’s new-found ability to swap cogs itself. Arguably, the former is the more sensational one, but it’s also possible that Porsche had it right all along, and that those most vocal about the PDK gearbox were never really potential GT3 buyers.

Either way, the imminent fix for Porsche’s fiery GT3 problem is good news for all concerned, especially for those who might want to buy a used example in a couple of years from now. That’s what makes a full service history so important …
