Cayenne Coupé to do battle with X6 and Range Rover Sport

2014 Porsche Cayenne
Adam Schoeman

Porsche appears intent on expanding its Cayenne range by adding a five-door coupé lookalike to its large SUV collection.

The car, which may be badged the Cayenne Coupé is set to supplement the Cayenne family, with the intention of luring buyers away from other coupé-styled SUVs, such as BMW’s X6.

Porsche will also be marketing the Cayenne Coupé as a potent sporty alternative to the regular Cayenne, which is very similar to what Land Rover has done with the Range Rover Sport.

The Coupé will not use the same platform as the current Cayenne, and will instead use a new version of the Volkswagen Group MLB platform, which is currently under development. The platform will also serve as a basis for several other VW Group vehicles, starting with next year’s new-generation Audi Q7.

Power-wise, the Coupé is expected to use an identical line-up of engines as the regular Cayenne, and should thus offer the familiar entry-level Diesel and S drivetrains, as well as the GTS and range-topping V8 Turbo and Turbo S versions.

It’s unknown if Porsche will grant the Coupé a slight power boost over the Cayenne (similar to what it’s done with the Cayman vs. the Boxster) but aesthetically, the new omdel is expected to place a strong emphasis a sportier look, crouching down lower and wearing a more aggressive 918 Spyder-inspired visage.

Should the Coupé project gain board approval, it could be released as part of the third-generation Cayenne range, due in 2018, and will command a premium over the standard versions.
