Opel readying new Corsa for Paris motor show

Opel Corsa Prototype
Adam Schoeman

Opel will be unveiling its completely redesigned Corsa at this year’s Paris Motor Show in October, a car that might not have the glamour of a prototype sports car, but that is probably one of the most important models for the firm.

The previous Corsa was not an exceptionally strong competitor in the subcompact segment, which has become very profitable as more and more buyers move away from bigger cars, replacing them with smaller and more efficient models.

Opel will be hoping to turn this around, and looking at the amount of work that has gone into the new Corsa, there is a good chance that it will be successful.

Designers of the new car say that, while it is based on a redesigned version of the platform that underpinned the previous Corsa, almost every aspect of the car has been changed. A completely new suspension and steering rack will be put in place and tuned to be engaging, and not just ‘sufficient’ as was case before.

A set of new engines will also be on offer, including a turbocharged 1,0-litre three-cylinder motor that will be paired with a six-speed manual gearbox.

While the car’s general silhouette will remain, Opel has said that one of its primary goals for the Corsa is to equip it with an interior that will be class-leading and kitted out with premium materials.

This has become an important part of the subcompact pull, because while people have been happy to downgrade on raw size, they still want something that feels like a premium car.

In general this is good news for everyone, because the Corsa has needed a revitalisation for a number of years now. It is also good news for all of us who enjoy a more spirited ride, because the Corsa OPC has always been one of those cars that excelled on paper, but was hamstrung by its execution.

With some luck, Opel will deliver an excellent Corsa base onto which OPC can sprinkle some performance magic.
