Mercedes-Benz readying four-vehicle AMG assault for Paris

Mercedes-Benz will be unveiling its latest C-class AMG variants at this year’s Paris Motor Show.

AMG plans to release the car in four body shapes, which should allow would-be buyers to choose a C-class AMG to suit almost any lifestyle. The car will be available as an estate, convertible, coupé or sedan, with all four going on sale before the end of 2015.

The biggest news for the executive sedan-sized AMG is that Mercedes-Benz has retired the previous generation’s brutally big and naturally aspirated 6,2-litre V8, choosing to replace it with a smaller but potentially more powerful turbocharged engine.

The new 4,0-litre unit might have less as far as displacement is concerned, but has so far been incorporated into models producing 433 kW, which is far beyond the previous-generation C63 AMG’s 336 kW.

Although the potential is there, it will be heavily detuned for the C-class variants, with an expected output of closer to 358 kW, which along with some other performance enhancing bits, should result in a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of 4,5 seconds for the fast C-class.

Seeing as the baby A45 AMG and CLA45 AMG both use Mercedes-Benz’s 4-Matic all-wheel drive system to tame their turbocharged engines, there was some talk of the C63 AMG also trading its rear-wheel drive layout for a four-wheel system. But this has apparently been rejected by the higher-ups at Mercedes-Benz, meaning that the C-class should retain its tail-happy entertainment potential.

The AMG models are planned to be released in the European market before the end of 2015, but it’s likely that this will happen in stages, with the sedan the first to debut, which suggests that SA buyers can expect the hot Merc by the end of the first quarter next year.
