Audi TT Offroad concept eyes with Range Rover Evoque

Audi is eyeing one of three potential TT concepts for production use as it bolsters its SUV line-up.

The TT offroad was first shown at the Beijing Motor Show back in April this year, but it would seem that it is now the favourite concept to make it into mainstream production, and that it will be aimed at the premium compact SUV market – a segment currently dominated by Range Rover’s Evoque.

While it shares the name of Audi’s everyday sports car, the TT offroad does not really have that much in common with its apparnet sibling. It has four doors and a stance that is significantly higher than that of the TT, and will also not use a traditional Haldex-based, multiplate quattro setup if the concept is anything to go by.

It is powered by the same EA888 2,0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the TT sports coupé, but also gains a pair of electric motors to bolster the powertrain. The first is a 40 kW / 220 Nm unit  integrated into the gearbox, while the second, beefier 85 kW / 270 Nm unit is linked to the rear axle.

All combined,  the TT offroad thus has 300 kW and 650 Nm on tap, and is able to complete a 0-100 km/h sprint in 5,2 seconds,. But it is also capable of a fuel economy rating of just 1. 8 litres/100 km.

This is entirely due to the concept being a plug-in hybrid that can be recharged wirelessly, which Audi claims has a 90 percent transfer efficiency.

All of this sounds very futuristic, but the TT offroad concept still employs the same, shared MQB platform used by Volkswagen and Porsche, meaning that it is possible for Audi to actually turn this vehicle into a production reality, even if it is likely to be exorbitantly expensive.

At present, the car’s interior is also far more concept than feasible reality. It features what Audi calls Smart Displays, which can stream TV through a customisable 312 mm TFT display. Expect the cabin of the production version to be a lot more pragmatic when the newcomer makes its bow in the next 18 months or so, though!
