Honda NSX sells out ahead of launch – Type R pre-orders opens

Honda UK have moved two of its most anticipated cars from the motor show floor and into the dealership, by taking orders for both the NSX supercar and Civic Type R hot hatch.

The NSX has been shown in nrea-production prototype form for more than a year now, and Honda has been accepting pre-orders for two-seater since its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. But Honda claims that it has accepted enough orders to fully account for the first production run of the car, with the result that it has closed pre-orders.

As one of Japan’s greatest sports cars, the NSX was the original everyday supercar that could be piloted to the race track to take on the Ferraris of its time, while costing significantly less. It was specifically characterised by its incredible handling.

The production version of the NSX will stay true the concept and feature a Sport Hybrid SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) system, combining the power of a naturally aspirated V6 with three electric motors. The V6 will be rigged to the rear wheels along with an electric motor, while the front wheels will be individually powered by an electric motor each, effectively giving the car all-wheel drive abilities.

On top of that, Honda has tuned the car’s handling specifically for the immense amount of torque the electric power plants will produce, building torque vectoring output mapping into the front wheel-mounted electrical motors.

It is rumoured that NSX will produce 300 kW, but nothing has been said regarding the supercar’s torque.

Honda has also opened the pre-order book for the Civic Type-R, arguably the most significant Honda in the last 10 years, after being inundated with requests for the car’s release.

The Civic, unlike the NSX, will be an analogue enthusiast’s dream, merging legendary Honda front-wheel drive hatchback handling with a 2,0-litre turbocharged engine, and a six-speed manual gearbox.

Honda wants the Civic to be the fastest front-wheel drive hatch on the market, and has been seen testing at the Nürburgring ahead of the car’s official launch, which will come early next year.

Apart from producing an estimated 225 kW, the Civic will also be fitted with a four-point Adaptive Damper System that was developed specially for the Type-R. The dynamic dampers will allow the Civic to offer a comfortable ride and then shift to a track-focused setting when needed.

On top of that, Honda has also fitted a mechanical system to the front wheels that it says will reduce torque steer. The additional steer axis is supported by two kingpins and combat the natural tendency of a torque-rich engine to ‘pull’ the steering in a certain direction when accelerating hard.

The Type R has also been enjoying its time at various motor shows, making an appearance at the recent Paris Motor Show. According to insiders the look of the car has remained unchanged moving from concept to production, so we can expect a very aggressive Civic when the car is finally launched towards the middle of 2015.
