Jaguar’s crossover won’t be labelled an SUV

Jaguar is adamant that its much anticipated SUV will be labelled differently.

According to company sources, Jaguar can’t be seen to be producing a utility vehicle, as that’s very much the realm of sister company Land Rover and its associated premium brand, Range Rover.
Instead, Jaguar will be focusing on creating a high-riding sports car, more in line with what BMW has achieved with the X6.

The X6, which is due for an overhaul in the next few months, is part of the Bavarian marque’s Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) range, and is far more geared towards the sporty side of things than all-terrain capability or people-carrying utility.

It has an interior that is quite constricted at the rear, and features two fully formed rear seats instead of a bench. While it does have a higher rider height than the 5-Series, it is far less practical in hauling people than the X5, for instance.

The C-X17, pictured above, has been mooted as the inspiration for Jaguar’s upcoming newcomer, but the British auto maker appears unsure about how to name its latest model, let alone positioning it in the market.

Apparently, it is being referred to as a sports crossover internally, but there are concerns that the crossover moniker has low-end connotations, and we are sure that Jaguar will try and steer clear of that description in its final incarnation.

What we do know is that Jaguar will be focusing on the sporty side of this equation, and will try to build an athletic vehicle that also happens to be perched on a taller, raised platform. Jaguar has been quick to acknowledge that the newcomer is unlikely to be as sporty as the rest of its range, but is confident that the vehicle will still be sensational to drive.

As far as we know, Jaguar is aiming to release the production-ready version of the C-X17 in 2016, so there is still plenty of time to work on getting the name – and the positioning – just right.
