F-Pace badge confirmed for Jaguar’s first SUV

Adam Schoeman

Jaguar’s first 2016 crossover model won’t only be a departure from the British marque’s model norm, but will also adopt a new naming approach, as the newcomer will be badged F-Pace.

That designation suggests that the F-Pace, which is closely based on the C-X17 concept car, will share at least some elements with the F-Type Coupee. In other words, the newcomer should be considered a mix of sporty coupé and SUV, rather than a conventional soft-roader.

According to Ian Cullum, Jaguar’s design boss, creating this link to the F-Type took the longest time in terms of development, as it was not that easy to marry the sleek looks of a  sports car to the more utilitarian proportions of a SUV.

Nor is the F-Pace a small vehicle: it stands as tall as a Range Rover Evoque, but is some 40 cm longer, which translates into dimensions almost identical to the C-X17.

Getting the styling just right was probably one of the most important aspects for Jaguar, as the F-Pace is expected to become one of its top two selling vehicles. The other is the smaller XE saloon, which will take on the likes of BMW’s 3-series and Audi’s A4.

Jaguar is expecting to more than double its annual sales with the help of the F-Pace and the XE.

Powering the F-Pace will be a series of engines that we imagine will be very similar to those found on the XE. This means that a series of small-capacity turbocharged four-cylinder engines, as well a supercharged 3,0-litre V6, could be on the cards.

Very little of the F-Pace’s actual design has been revealed, but Jaguar has released this promotional video which quite clearly shows the vehicle’s F-Type-inspired tail lights, and rear-end styling approach.
