Geneva readies reveal of Audi R8

New Audi R8

Audi has earmarked the Geneva Motor Show as the stage on which it will be releasing the second generation Audi R8.

The car, which follows in the foot teps of the Lamborghini Huracan, will feature a slight increase in size but will retain the two high-revving naturally aspirated engines of the original R8.

The Audi R8 is expected to grow a bit in length, while the rear track will be extended, in line with what Lamborghini has done. The rear will also feature a larger diffuser, as well as new exhausts.

Audi has indicated that the handling of this second generation will be much improved, as the suspension and geometry have been changed, allowing Audi engineers greater freedom in tuning certain handling characteristics.

Under the bonnet will be a choice of either a 4,2-litre V8 or 5,2-litre V10. Power figures are not known just yet, but Lamborghini has managed to coax 449 kW out of the sam engine for the Huracan, although he R8’s output will be less than that.

The V8 will more than likely be an evolution of the RS5 V8, that currently produces 331 kW.

While all R8s will come with LED lights, the new laser light technology will be available as an optional extra. We tested an Audi A8 last year with this tech, and were blow away by how bright and intelligent the units were, but they were anything but cheap.

We are hoping that a significant amount of time is spent on the car’s interior which felt quite old at the end. According to reports the Audi R8 will receive the same digital display as the TT.

Audi will probably have to engineer an Audi R8 with a smaller capacity turbocharged engine at some point during this second generation’s lifecycle. There are certain countries where engine displacement is taxed, such as China, and they are key to selling enough units to make the car viable.

This is no surprise, as Ferrari has had the same problem.

Luckily for Audi it has lots of experience with turbocharged engines, and even a slightly smaller capacity version of the RS6 engine will be explosive in the R8.
