2017 promises S-Class cabriolet fun

2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe

Mercedes-Benz has sort of confirmed that it’s working on a drop-top version of the S-Class Coupé which should debut before the end of the year.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class cabriolet will build on the success of the S-Class Coupé and create a platform from which Mercedes can strike out at the Bentley Continental GTC. Mercedes-Benz will be aiming this car at those that want to be able to fold away the roof while transporting four adults in luxury.

With that target in mind, and given the S-Class heritage of offering equal space and luxury for front and rear passengers, the S-Class cabriolet will not skimp on room and board for those in the rear.

That almost certainly rules out a foldable hard-top, as the space requirements are simply unrealistic, leaving a soft-top as the only option. The rest of the car will certainly lean on the sleek styling provided by the Coupé.

Prototypes of the car have been around since 2012, while the 2006 Ocean Drive four-door convertible could be considered an early concept. But thanks to the S-Class Coupé platform, this is the first time that a car like this could make sense, because it shares so much with the Coupé.

If the car debuts before the end of the year, we should hopefully see a production unit sometime in 2017. Long live luxury star gazing!
