A lighter, more advanced Jaguar XF for New York Motor Show

Jaguar has revealed a near full specification and picture set of the upcoming executive saloon, the XF, ahead of its official unveiling at the New York Motor Show.

It’s been seven years since the debut of the original  Jaguar XF, so this model is quite overdue, but looking at the advances Jaguar has made it would seem that that hiatus was worth it.

The biggest change to the Jaguar XF is completely invisible, as it will ride on the same aluminium-rich platform as the brand’s smaller executive sedan, the XE. That means that almost 75% of the Jaguar XF’s structure is aluminium, meaning the new car weighs 190 kg less than before.

That weight saving has translated into a much reduced CO2 emissions output, as well improved dynamic performance, while also enhancing the structure’s stiffness by nearly 30%.

That doesn’t mean that the Jaguar XF is smaller than before, measuring almost exactly as long as the outgoing model, but the wheelbase has been increased by 51 mm to improve cabin space.

The XF inherits the same suspension setup (struts with double wishbones at the front and an ‘integral link’ independent set-up at the rear) as the XE, as well as the electric steering form the F-Type.

The Jaguar XF will also be offered with active dampers along with a feature known as Jaguar Configurable Dynamics. JDC will allow the driver to change how the car’s steering, engine, eight-speed automatic gearbox and dampers react.

Another unique piece of technology that Jaguar will be adding to the XF is All-Surface Progress Control. It helps the driver navigate adverse conditions at low speeds, automatically managing the brakes and throttle, requiring that the driver only steers. This seems to be a European icy-road sort of option and is less relevant to local drivers.

The interior has moved away from the previous styling with a large 10.2” screen taking up much of the dashboard space. The signature rising rotor that controls gear selection and the opening air vents will return to this interior.

As far as engines go, Jaguar will be using a series of four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The most frugal of the lot is a 120 kW / 380 Nm  2,0-litre diesel engine that has a class-leading CO2 rating of 104 g/km. Jaguar says there will also be a more powerful version of that engine which will produce 132 kW and 430 Nm of torque.

The top of the range diesel will use a twin-turbocharged 3,0-litre V6 motor, producing 220 kW and 700 Nm of torque. There will only be one petrol engine available at launch, which will be the familiar supercharged 3,0-litre V6, producing 280 kW and 450 Nm of torque.

Jaguar has not mentioned when or if the R and R-S models will become available.

The Jaguar XF is expected to reach European showrooms by the end of the year, and local buyers should be able to expect it here by mid-2016.
