A celebratory Golf GTI has been shown by Volkswagen in preparation for the car’s 40th anniversary, and ahead of the Wörthersee fan meet up in Austria.

While the vehicle shown here is still a concept, Volkswagen has said that only the wheels will be changed for the production version, dropping them down a size to 18” instead of 19”.

The body kit will be near-identical to this one, sporting a rear-mounted spoiler and diffuser, and a black graphic running around the lower part of the GTI. The front receives a reworked and more aggressive bumper with additional cut-outs.

Unlike some other special editions, the Golf Clubsport will not just be a collection of new exterior pieces and some interior trim, but will in actual fact become the most powerful production GTI ever made.

Volkswagen says it has reworked the stalwart EA888 2,0-litre turbocharged motor which now produces 195 kW opposed to the 169 kW of the Performance Package Golf GTI VII. Over and above that, the turbocharger has a function that will give an additional 10% power for short bursts when the throttle is pinned, giving the car a potential output of 214 kW.

There are no official torque figures yet, but engineers close to the project have said that the current torque rating of 350 Nm will probably remain untouched.

This power will be channelled through a choice of either a six-speed manual or dual-clutch DSG gearbox to the front wheels where Volkswagen’s XDS electronically controlled differential will minimise torque steer.

The Golf Clubsport will be debuting at the Wörthersee fan meet up, but will enter production in 2016, forty years after the first Golf GTI rolled off the assembly line in 1976.
