Renault shelves Laguna name for Talisman

Renault’s next-generation Laguna will not be called a Laguna at all. The French motoring company is consolidating its global brands, and will adopt the Talisman name, already used in China, for its new four-door executive sedan.

The Talisman will borrow a lot of its styling cues from the next-generation Mégane, which like the Talisman, is due to arrive in 2016. Renault will be playing it relatively safe though, as the car will be a standard saloon, in the same vein as the Volkswagen Passat and Mazda 6.

There has been no indication of what engines will be available, but Renault is focusing on making the Talisman a model that “delivers intense driving enjoyment founded on a genuinely sensorial experience”.

That could really mean anything, but we would think that the 1,2-litre turbocharged engine from the Mégane GT-line Turbo is a prime candidate. The 97 kW four-cylinder engine will provide plenty of shove and still grant the car decent fuel consumption, but for our money we would hope that the 162 kW 2,0-litre version is also available.

From what we understand Renault will be focusing on the interior of the Talisman more than anything else, fitting it with technologically advanced equipment.

This will include features such as a digital instrument cluster and a large multimedia screen.

The previous Laguna was a bit of a non-starter, and didn’t offer enough appeal for a potential buyer to really want one. Renault is planning on fixing this by making the Talisman a more adventurous model in terms of styling.

And for a change we think Renault can pull this off if you look at how it has styled the new Captur crossover.

As mentioned, the Talisman will go on sale in 2016, but not in Europe, where Renault says that the demand for saloon cars has not seen the growth required to launch another model.
