Faraday Future to shake up the motor industry

But can Faraday Future carve out a place in such a competitive market.

Secretive automotive start-up Faraday Future is planning to release its first vehicle to the public at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show in January. CES does seem like an unlikely place for a fledgling car maker to be showing off its debut vehicle, but Faraday is not only delivering a vehicle: it’s also aiming to change the way interface with our cars.

Looking at the name, it is no surprise that the marque’s first model is set to be an all-electric vehicle in the same vein as the Tesla S. No much is known about the technical aspects except that the battery on board is 15 percent larger than the Tesla, which could push the car’s range to 480 km.

However, we think that those extra kiloWatt-hours are being provided for all the ancillary systems which will help the firm realise its mission statement; launching a fully electric vehicle that will offer smart and seamless connectivity to the outside world.

Faraday Future is also not content with just selling cars, and intents to spearhead certain unique ownership models, as well as selling in-vehicle content.

Both of these have become quite common recently. Companies like Air-BnB and Uber have both changed the way rental and metered taxi or transportation are bring operated, making it easier for customers to get exactly what they want. The iPhone is no longer only a phone but a way for Apple to push its content.

Head of Design Richard Kim recently said it wants to make consumer technology more advanced. He used an example of his house thermostat that knows exactly what he wants, but that his car is not able to do the same.

How does Faraday Future plan to do this? Well it has provided some indications, including drivers getting work done while stuck in traffic as well as aromatherapy and an ergonomic chair. This could mean that the company is pursuing pseudo-autonomous traffic driving and a productive but relaxing cabin style.

What we have heard about the Faraday Future ownership model is also pretty interesting, including offering buyers specifically tailored leasing plans. For example, you could decide you only need a city car in the week but a larger more family-orientated vehicle on the weekends. Faraday apparently wants to make that happen.

This is also not some small US start-up trying to kick-start a vehicle built in a back yard. The firm has already poached talent from Tesla, BMW’s i program, Lamborghini, Audi and Ferrari, and plans to build a billion-dollar factory in the US.

In addition, Faraday Future is also being tipped as a start-up backed by Apple, which has been showing an interest in entering the vehicle manufacturing space for a few years now. Making that entry via a start-up like Faraday could be a better way to judge the feasibility of such a move before committing too many assets to the project.
