New Scenic revealed ahead of Geneva

Renault Scenic

Images of the latest Renault Scenic have been revealed ahead of the car’s official unveiling next month, showing a crossover that is sexier and more SUV-like ever before.

The Renault design language is easy to spot, drawing heavily on the latest generation Clio and Captur, but it is also reminiscent of the R-Space concept car that Renault showed almost five years ago.

Unlike the R-Space, which teased the world with rear-hinged doors, the Scenic has opted for a more traditional door layout, but some concept-car embellishments have survived, such as the low roofline and 20-inch wheels.

The Scenic has also grown its front and rear tracks, widening the vehicle while also increasing ground clearance. These changes, in particular, have given the Scenic more SUV-like qualities than ever before. The changes make sense seeing how popular SUVs and crossovers have become in Europe while pushing out MPVs in the process.

It could be that Renault is trying to expand the crossover genre by adding a vehicle that can carry seven people, but that would not make it an SUV in the traditional sense of the word.

It comes down to sex appeal, something that SUVs have and that MPVs lack. But Renault is all too aware of this, adding that its goal with the new Scenic is to make it a “… sexier and more modern take on the MPV”.

The car should be on show at the Geneva Expo next month, where we will also find out when it will be released.
