More muscle for Range Rover SVR to tackle Cayenne?

Spy photos of a more aggressive looking Range Rover Sport may suggest that a power hike could be on the cards for the SVR version.

The vehicle seen undergoing testing in a camouflaged state wore minor exterior details including slightly larger air vents, hinting at the power increase.

Currently Range Rover’s most potent vehicle, the Sport SVR, produces a fearsome 404 kW from its supercharged 5,0-litre V8 engine. But speculation is that Land Rover wants more, especially when facing off against arch-rival Porsche and its Cayenne.

Even though the SVR has more power than the Cayenne Turbo, both can sprint to 100 km/h in 4,5 seconds. The Porsche’s advantage is that it is 70 kg lighter than the 2,3 ton Range Rover, which is enough to make up for its 382 kW output.

But with the advent of the Jaguar F-Type SVR and, more importantly, its even more powerful V8, Land Rover may have found a way of outpacing the Porsche. The Jaguar version of the engine produces an extra 18 kW, which should be enough to get the Sport’s nose ahead of the Cayenne’s in any drag race.

The Cayenne Turbo S will probably still hold the crown of fastest SUV, thanks to its 419 kW and 4,1 second 0-100km/h sprint time.

There has been no confirmation of the updated SVR’s existence from Land Rover, but the working theory is that it will be arriving in early 2017 along with the rest of the facelifted Range Rover Sport range. This timeline will also give the Sport SVR a full year in the pound seats before Porsche updates the Cayenne
