Mazda CX-4 teased

The recent and ongoing success of Mazda’s CX crossovers and SUVs has much to do with the way the Japanese auto maker has managed to endow them with both upmarket appeal and value.

But if a teaser image released ahead of the Beijing Motor Show is anything to go by, Mazda is far from done with the CX sub-brand.

The image shows the left rear corner of a vehicle that Mazda says is the new CX-4, a crossover that will be positioned between the CX3 and CX-5.

In reality, the CX-4 is likely to be more like a sleeker and sporty version of the CX-5 as both have about the same length and wheelbase. Indeed, the CX-4 and CX-5 share the same platform, so expect the CX-4 to also dip into the CX-5 engine jar.

A range of turbocharged four-cylinder diesel and naturally aspirated petrol units are therefore the most likely engine candidates, linked to either the front or all four wheels.

Based on the images Mazda has released the CX-4’s styling will undoubtedly reference the 2015 Koeru concept, displayed at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Apart from its monster truck-sized wheels, the Koeru was a pretty close representation of a possible production model, having pushed the Kodo styling to a new level, especially as far as the front-end treatment was concerned.

With a concept in the bag from last year and a shared platform, we would think that the CX-4 would be in good shape to launch this year, but according to those close to the project, Mazda is only planning on a release date in 2017.

Pricing is expected to mirror the CX-4’s positioning, putting it between the CX-3 and CX-5.
