Opel’s all-new Astra set to shine

Opel’s all-new Astra set to shine
Deon Schoeman

Opel has launched the brand new Astra in South Africa. The 11th generation of Opel’s most important model promises a mix of good looks, top spec and engaging yet efficient performance.

Physically smaller than the previous generation, the new Astra is a striking hatch. Taut surfaces and thoughtful detailing give the car an aggressive yet stylish appeal, with details like the blacked out C-pillar and its floating roof effect being just some of the highlights.

Inside, Opel engineers have managed to carve out more interior space, despite the car’s diminished dimensions. As a result, head and shoulder room are bigger than expected, making the rear especially comfortable.

Newly designed seats ensure comfort for all occupants, and Opel is going all-out to provide a high-tech cabin to match: highlights include keyless operation, a seven-inch touch screen with Apple Car Play / Android Auto and satnav, dual-zone climate control and cruise control.

The Astra also features an impressive array of driver assistance systems, including lane keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, collision warning and, for the first time in this segment, active LED headlights.

Standard on higher spec models, the Intellilux LED Matrix system removes the need for the driver to control lighting; the technology automatically adjusts the high beam for oncoming traffic, while simultaneously distributing light in the most effective way.

Engine choices in the new Opel Astra start with a 1,0-litre three-cylinder turbo petrol with 77 kW and 170 Nm (sipping just 4,3 litres/00km), offered with a five-speed manual gearbox only.

Next in line is a 1 400 cc turbo petrol delivering 110 kW and 230 Nm, offered with a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed auto gearboxes. Top of the range is a 1 600 cc turbo petrol with an output of 147 kW and 28 0Nm (300 Nm on overboost), with a 0-100 km/h sprint time of 7 sec and a top speed of 235 km/h – here, the only gearbox option is a six-speed manual.
