VW previews luxury SUV in Beijing

Volkswagen has chosen the upcoming Beijing Motor Show as the forum for the unveiling of a concept car that’s said to preview the German marque’s upcoming premium SUV: the new VW Touareg.

The all-new vehicle, due to be unveiled in its final production form during the course of 2017, features a sleek but substantial shape, a hybrid drivetrain, and a particular focus on creating a premium interior.

VW appears set to elevate the new Touareg to levels of luxury, technology and convenience usually reserved for upmarket brands such as Audi. It’s also expected to showcase VW’s digitisation of the automobile, including a digital display system aimed at boosting ease of use and interactivity.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain offers a maximum power output of 280 kW, linked to a torque peak of 700 Nm, and will have a zero-emissions operating range of 50 km in full electric mode. Overall combined cycle consumption is expected to be 3,6 litres/100 km.

Even so, the vehicle is no slouch off the mark, reaching 100 km/h from rest in just 6,0 seconds. Top speed is limited to 220 km/h.

Hybrid drivetrains remain an elusive breed in South Africa, but in Europe demand continues to grow in leaps and bounds.
