BMW unveils world’s most powerful turbodiesel engine

BMW unveils world’s most powerful turbodiesel engine
Deon Schoeman

BMW’s new 3,0-litre six-cylinder turbodiesel engine is remarkable not only because of its generous power and torque outputs, but because it employs no less than four turbochargers to deliver all that muscle.

The engine, which will power the BMW 750d, produces 294 kW of maximum power at 4 400 r/min, linked to 760 Nm of torque. Multi-stage turbocharging via four TwinPower turbochargers, and a common-rail direct injection system operating at a pressure of more than 2 500 bar set this straight-six engine apart from the norm.

The turbocharger array consists of two low-pressure turbochargers operating at low engine speeds, and two high-pressure turbochargers accommodated in a single housing. Exhaust gas reticulation for both low-pressure and high-pressure stages further enhances efficiency.

The four turbochargers operate sequentially to achieve almost instantaneous boost, and to regulate boost linearly throughout the rev range for optimised power output. Thus, more than 450 Nm of torque is already on tap at just 1 000 r/min, while the full 760 Nm is available between 2 000 and 3 000 r/min.

As a result, the BMW 750d xDrive is propelled from rest to 100 km/h in a very athletic 4,6 seconds, thanks in part to the big sedan’s all-wheel drive system, but despite its not inconsiderable bulk. The long-wheelbase 750Ld xDrive is only 0,1 sec slower.

The new engine’s enhanced efficiency is also reflected in the fuel consumption figures. BMW claims a combined cycle figure of between 5,7 and 5,9 litres/100 km, with CO2 emissions of between 149 and 155 g/km.

To cope with a very high engine compression ratio, the six-cylinder features extremely strong aluminium castings, a five-layer cylinder head and pistons featuring an aluminium/cilicone alloy. The transmission is BMW’s eight-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox.

The new 750d models go on sale in Europe in July.
