Hybrid Volvo XC90 finally makes its local bow

Hybrid Volvo XC90 finally makes its local bow

Volvo has launched its XC90 T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid in South Africa. The model now occupies the flagship position within the range, and at the same time, brings the local market a step closer to an electric future.

Visually, there is almost nothing to distinguish the T8 Twin Engine from the rest of the XC90 stable, besides a discreet badge on the tailgate and an extra filler cap behind the front left wheel arch, which serves as a cover for the charging connector.

Being a cutting-edge hybrid, the biggest changes are to the drivetrain: up front, you’ll find a 2,0-litre four-cylinder petrol with both a turbo- and supercharger, putting out 235 kW and 400 Nm to the front wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

On the rear axle, there’s an electric motor with an additional 65 kW and 240 Nm. Together, the the two power sources endow the big SUV with an impressive 0-100 km/h sprint time of just 5,6 sec.

Perhaps a bigger consideration in a plug-in hybrid is its efficiency, and Volvo’s figures are quite staggering: in hybrid drive mode, the company claims the XC90 T8 Twin Engine can achieve a consumption figure of just 2,1 litres/100km, based on the European plug-in hybrid electric vehicle regulations.

In pure electric mode, the 9,2 kWh lithium-ion battery has a range of 43 km, and can travel up to speeds of 125 km/h. Further drive modes include all-wheel drive and an off-road mode.

Volvo SA claims that with its generous spec, the XC90 T8 Twin Engine offers true value. Available in three spec levels, the standard features include panoramic sunroof, powered tailgate, cruise control, keyless operation, satellite navigation and electric seats.

Optionally available are a high-end Bowers & Wilkins sound system, air suspension and adaptive cruise control.

Pricing starts at R1 053 400 for the Momentum spec, with the mid-level Inscription model going for R1 092 900. The range topping R Design is priced at R1 117 700.
