RPM TV Ep390: Updated VW Golf. All-new Mazda CX-5. Sexy BMW M240i Convertible. Racing the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb

The Volkswagen Golf remains the compact hatchback benchmark, but the company isn’t resting on its laurels. The current Golf 7 has just received an upgrade offering enhanced aesthetics, smarter interiors and some drivetrain changes. We test-drive the latest VW Golf GTI on a 600 km jaunt into the heart of the Eastern Cape.

Mazda continues to make a name for itself as a maker of contemporary, well-equipped and value-priced cars. The all-new Mazda CX-5 provides an indication of the premium direction the Japanese auto maker is taking – and the result is pretty convincing on most levels.

Convertibles are usually the domain of glamour girls and wind-in-the-hair poseurs. But the BMW M240i Convertible manages to mix glamour and real pace in a package that’s engaging to drive, top up or down.

Finally, RPM TV’s annual pilgrimage to the Jaguar Simola Hillclimb saw us entering an Alfa Romeo 4C Spider for the second year running. It turned out to be another successful outing, but the real action was at the sharp end of the field.

This week’s show premieres a half-hour earlier, at 20h00 on SuperSport 8 on Wednesday
17 May. As last-minute changes to the broadcast schedule are frequent, please check the latest transmission schedule under ‘Motorsport’ on the SuperSport website’s ‘TV’ section, or the DStv Electronic Programme Guide.

If you have a PVR decoder, set it to record the entire RPM TV series, and never miss an episode! You can also catch us on DSTV CatchUp, under ‘Sport’ in the ‘Motor’ category.
